The Lager Cup was founded in October 1997 at Trevose Golf and Country Club - a championship golf course in North Cornwall. It has now become a fixture recognised as the single finest golf matchplay event in the sporting calendar.
Two teams battle for the honour and privilege of lifting this prestigious trophy, playing 54 holes of matchplay golf over two days on one of the most challenging and beautiful golf courses in the world. They are Pride & Glory and The Trevose Eagles.
2024 Lager Cup goes down to the wire
After The Trevose Eagles triumphed in 2023, Pride & Glory arrived on the North Cornish coast with intent. Could Pride & Glory regain the Lager Cup hosted as ever at the country's favourite links course, Trevose Golf & Country Club?
Some late drama affected the squad selection from both teams, meaning 2024 which had proposed an increase to 14 players per side, resulted in 13 players going toe to toe under clear blue skies on a beautiful, if windy, October day.
Pride & Glory were on the back foot early in the Foursomes and the scoreboard was almost exclusively in the Eagles favour, however their steely determination saw them turn the tables and lead at lunch by three points. The Eagles weren't ready to roll over as ever, and turned the screw in the afternoon fourball-better-ball matches resulting in a nailbiting overnight score of 7½-6½ in Pride & Glory's favour.
With live scoring available for most matches Pride & Glory looked comfortable through most of a beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon. However all but a few matches were close, and sure enough as the matches reached their conclusions it became too difficult to call. And so it was that the final group of live matches reached 18. The Trevose Eagles were up in one, and level in the other. P&G needed 1 point to win the Lager Cup from those two matches. Half a point would draw and both points to the Eagles would secure back to back victories. The Eagles win the first, then finally have a three foot putt to halve the match and the Lager Cup. Would it drop? Would it? The crowds were all watching on as the ball had a look in the hole and decided, no, it would lip out to give Pride & Glory a stunning victory. The crowds - once they'd done the maths - went wild.
So the singles finished 6.5-6.5 - Pride & Glory won the 2024 Lager Cup 14-13.

The inaugural Lager Cup comprised three fourball better ball matches (six players per team), this was increased to eight players playing two rounds (foursomes matches followed by fourball matches) in 2000. Then in 2001 it expanded again to include 10 players per team and the competition extended to two days, playing foursomes on a Friday morning, Fourballs in the afternoon and a Singles match on the Saturday. In 2002 the numbers increased to 12 players per team and that remains the format to this day.
