The Lager Cup

The Lager Cup was founded in October 1997 at Trevose Golf and Country Club - a championship golf course in North Cornwall. It has now become a fixture recognised as the single finest golf matchplay event in the sporting calendar.

Two teams battle for the honour and privilege of lifting this prestigious trophy, playing 54 holes of matchplay golf over two days on one of the most challenging and beautiful golf courses in the world. They are Pride & Glory and The Trevose Eagles.

Pride & Glory secure victory in 2025

Coming into the 2025 Lager Cup the Trevose Eagles led by three in total number of events won. Pride & Glory were keen as ever to close the gap and win the title for the fourth time in five years. The planning from P&G was predictably comprehensive.

Arriving at Trevose it became very clear that Fred had got the memo. The kit was outstanding. Some off-course merch from both teams just added more kudos to an already outstanding sporting event. Personalised hole branding from both teams was a surprise to everyone involved.

The Cornish breeze was 'brisk' from start to finish. But it didn't prevent the golfers from providing some sparkling performances.

The foursomes was won narrowly by P&G taking a one point lead into lunch on day 1. A two point gap in the fourball-better-balls in P&Gs favour left a narrow three point lead going into the Singles with 14 points up for grabs. It was simple - Pride & Glory required 5½ points to retain the Cup, 6 points to win it. The Eagles needed 8½ to win the Cup back.

With live scoring available and fans following from all over the globe the matches looked level from the outset. In the end P&G did what they needed to do, and ended up winning the third consecutive session to win the 2025 Lager Cup.

The inaugural Lager Cup comprised three fourball better ball matches (six players per team), this was increased to eight players playing two rounds (foursomes matches followed by fourball matches) in 2000. Then in 2001 it expanded again to include 10 players per team and the competition extended to two days, playing foursomes on a Friday morning, Fourballs in the afternoon and a Singles match on the Saturday. In 2002 the numbers increased to 12 players per team and then in 2024 the numbers were increased further to 14 players per team and that remains the format to this day.
